Brahler, who is identified as a widow, even though her husband Henry Brahler lived to at least the ripe old age of 86 (1953). Lena's sister, Margaret Thompson Sorg (62) is also in the house, as is a boarder named Bruce Hopper (35). Edna's sister, Pearl Brahler Bunting lived a short distance away on the same street.

In an article about the third wedding anniversary of Cora Brahler and Hark Pryor, the guests include "Mr. and Mrs. Russell Stemm, and daughter Ruth, and son Richard Harmer." (Zanesville Times Recorder, 1 Dec 1934).

The 1947 wedding announcement of Edna's son Richard Harmer gives his mother's name as Mrs. Enda Gordon of Santa Maria, Calif.

A brief note in the 1953 Zanesville Times Recorder stated that Frona Brahler Gooden traveled to Barstow Calif. to visit her sister, Mrs. Jack Speer.

Henry Brahler's 1957 obituary states that one of his children was Mrs. Robert Hartley of Barstow, Calif.

John Herbst [Parents] 1, 2, 3, 4 was born 5 on 24 Jun 1843 in Ohio. He died before 1900. He married 6 Barbara Roehrig on 11 Nov 1867 in St. Mary, Fulda, Noble Co., OH.

Records conflict on place of birth:
1860 census -- Hesse
1870 census -- Ohio
Since records for his older sisters indicate that they were born in America, it is assumed that John was born here as well.

In 1860, 19 year old farmer John "Harper," lived with his parents and younger sister in Enoch Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. He attended school during the previous year.

In 1870, 27 year old John "Harpst" lived in Enoch Twp. with his wife Barbara (24) and their infant daughter Caroline (6 months). Adjacent farms in the census belonged to John's in-laws, Adam and Elizabeth Schafer, and his parents, Andrew and Beata Harpst.

At the time of the 1880 census, John Herbst (38) and his wife Barbara lived in Enoch Twp. with their six children: Caroline (10), Lewis (7), Leonard (6), Andrew (4), Margaret (2), and Kate (8 mos). Caroline and Lewis attended school that year. Also living with them was John's 71 year old widowed mother, Bertha. Neighboring households in the census were those of Henry Huffman and Adam Schafer.

The following note appeared in the "Fulda Locals" section of The Caldwell Citzens' Press on 29 Dec 1881:
John Herbert recently lost a valuable cow.

John apparently did not have much luck with cows. On 20 Mar 1884, the Fulda column of The Caldwell Citizens' Press reported:
March 9th, John Huffman and John Harpst each lost a valuable cow.

From the Fulda column of The Caldwell Citizens' Press, 29 May 1884:
John Hespot and John Singer lost their spring colts last week.

Barbara Roehrig [Parents] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 was born 6 in Jun 1846 in Virginia. She died after 1910. She married 7 John Herbst on 11 Nov 1867 in St. Mary, Fulda, Noble Co., OH.

Records conflict on date of birth:
1843 Snider
1846 1850 & 1900 census,
1844 1860 census

In 1900, 53 year old widow Barbara Harbst owned a mortgaged house at 725 Helena Ave. in Braddock, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania where she lived with four of her children: Edward (18), Mary (15), Cecilia (11) and Elizabeth (10), and two grandchildren, John (6) and Clara (3) Brahler -- the children of Barbara's oldest child, Caroline Herbst Brahler. Cecilia and Elizabeth attended school. Also boarding in the house were several Fulda natives: Joseph Schaffer (30), Alexander Crock (21) and Charles Hockman (Hohman?) (26). Barbara's son Leonard lived next door. Everyone in the home was born in Ohio. Joseph Schaffer and Alexander Crock were nephews of Barbara's late husband, John Herbst.

Seven of Barbara's ten children were still living at the time of the 1900 census. One of the deceased children was her fourth child, Andrew. It is not known who the other deceased children were. Oddly, the 1910 census states that 8 of Barbara's 10 children were alive.

By 1910, Barbara Herbst owned the home at 725 Helena St. free and clear. She lived there with her three adult unmarried daughters, Mary (25), Ceceliia (22), and Elizabeth (20), and grandchildren John (16) and Clara (13) "Praler." Only Clara attended school.

They had the following children:

  F i Carolina Herbst
M ii Louis Herbst 1, 2 was born on 21 Jun 1872 in Fulda, Noble Co., OH. He was christened in St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Fulda, Noble Co., OH.
  M iii Leonard A. Herbst
M iv Andrew Herbst 1, 2 was born on 28 May 1876 in Fulda, Noble Co., OH. He was christened in St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Fulda, Noble Co., OH. He died on 24 Dec 1886 in Noble Co., OH. He was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fulda, Noble Co., OH.

F vi Catharina Herbst "Kate" 1, 2, 3, 4 was born on 8 Apr 1880 in Fulda, Noble Co., OH. She was christened in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fulda, Noble Co., OH.

In 1920, 38 year old unmarried Katherine Herbst lived with her sisters Mary (35) and Cecelia (33) Herbst and her niece Clara Brahler (23) in a rented home at the rear of 114 Corey Ave. in Braddock Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Mary was not employed, Katherine worked as a presser in a laundry and Cecelia and Clara as armature winders in an electric plant. All members of the household were born in Ohio, Mary's parents were born in West Virginia.

In 1930, 44 year old unmarried Mary T. Herbst lived with her sisters Katherine (49) and Cecelia (42) Herbst in a rented home (rent $25/mo) on Corry Ave. in Braddock Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Mary was not employed, Katherine worked as a laundress in a public laundry and Cecelia as a coil winder in an electric plant.

F viii Mary Herbst 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 was born on 3 Jun 1884 in Fulda, Noble Co., OH. She was christened in St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Fulda, Noble Co., OH.

Birth announcement from the Fulda column in The Caldwell Citizens' Press on 12 Jun 1884:

All members of the household were born in Ohio, Mary's parents were born in West Virginia. Living a few doors away from the Herbst sisters was the family of William Huffman. William's mother, Rosina Brahler Huffman, was a native of Fulda.
F ix Ottilia Cecilia Herbst 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 was born on 7 Jun 1887 in Fulda, Noble Co., OH. She was christened in St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Fulda, Noble Co., OH.

The daughter between Mary and Elizabeth Herbst is referred to as Cecilia in the 1900 and 1910 census, and her birthdate (in 1900) is given as Jun 1888. It is beleived that Ottilia and Cecelia are the same person.

In 1910, 22 year old Cecila Herbst lived with her widowed mother, two sisters, and a niece and nephew at 725 Helena St., Braddock, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Cecilia worked as a winder at the electric works.

  F x Anna Elizabeth Herbst

Andrew Herbst 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 was born in 1795 in Hesse Cassel, Germany. He died on 28 May 1874 in Noble Co., OH. He was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fulda, Noble Co., OH. He married Beata Ada.

Census records conflict on place of birth. 1850 census says Germany; 1870 says Ohio.

1850 Census, Monroe County, Ohio -- Enoch Township 424-425
Andrew Harps, 53, Germany, Farmer
Beata (?), 42, Germany
Elizabeth, 11, Virginia, attended school
Mary, 9, Ohio, attended school
John, 7, Ohio
Caroline, 1, Ohio
Adjacent farms in the census were those of George Miller and Cornelius Wells.

Noble County was formed in 1851 out of portions of Washington, Monroe, Morgan, and Guernsey Counties.
The Fulda area, where the family lived, was in Monroe County before the formation of Noble County.

1860 Census, Noble County, Ohio -- Enoch Township
Andrew Harper, 66, farmer $12,000-$500. Hesse
Ada, 60, Hesse, domestic
John, 19, Hesse, farmer, attended school
Caroline, 11, Ohio, attended school
Neighboring households in the census were those of 74 year old widow Margaret (Weber) Hohman, and John (60) and Margaret (61) Yeager.

In 1870, 74 year old Andrew Harpst lived in Enoch Twp. Noble County, Ohio with his wife Beata (68). Andrew and his wife were born in Hesse-Cassel. He did not own any real estate, and there is nothing listed for the value of his personal property. Andrew's occupation is "supported by son." Adjacent farms in the census belonged Andrew's son, John Harpst and Eve Clever.

Also enumerated in the household in 1870 were the Herbst's granddaughter, Katherine Shafer (7), and a 20 year old Ohio-born day laborer, John Roarch. John Roarch's parents were foreign-born. There is a cross (+) to the left of the names of John Roarch and Katherine Shafer. A note at the bottom of the census page states "belongs to Family 127." Family 127 is Andrew's son John Herbst. It's not entirely clear what the census-taker meant. Clearly, Katherine Shafer is not a member of John Herbst's immediate family... she is his wife's niece. Perhaps Katherine Schafer and John Roarch lived in the household of John Herbst, but the census-taker forgot to include them, then started to enumerate the next household (Andrew Herbst) after which he added the names of Katherine Shafer and John Roarch. John Roarch is believed to be Barbara Roehrig Herbst's younger brother.

Beata Ada 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 was born on 26 Feb 1809 in Hesse Cassel, Germany. She died on 21 Feb 1888 in Noble Co., OH. She was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fulda, Noble Co., OH. She married Andrew Herbst.

In 1880, 71 year old widow Bertha Herbst lived with the family of her son John in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. According to the census, she was born in Hesse.

They had the following children:

  F i Elizabeth Herbst
  F ii Mary Elizabeth Herbst
  M iii John Herbst
  F iv Carolina Herbst

William Coyne 1 was born about 1890. He married 2 Maria Stella Brahler on 18 Oct 1923.

Maria Stella Brahler [Parents] 1, 2 was born 3 on 25 May 1895 in Noble Co., OH. She died on 10 Jul 1995 in Youngstown, Mahoning Co., OH. She married 4 William Coyne on 18 Oct 1923.

Alternate first name: Estella.

Johannes Schoeppner [Parents] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 was born on 10 Mar 1787 in Mittelkalbach, Kreis Fulda, Hesse. He died on 29 Jan 1875 in near Fulda, Noble Co., OH. He was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fulda, Noble Co., OH. He married 7 Katharina Heil on 30 May 1809 in Germany.

At age 48, Johannes Schoeppner, his 45 year old pregnant wife Katherina, and their seven children left for America in 1835. Katharina gave birth to a daughter during the voyage. Katherina and her 6 year old son Herman died during the voyage to America. Although he lived another 40 years, Johannes never remarried. After what must have been a very difficult voyage Johannes arrived in America mourning the loss of his wife and youngest son.

The list of passengers for the Brig Ulysses show 50 year old sheppard, Johan Hohmann and his wife Anna Maria (49) and 10 year old Sebastian Hohmann. They were travelling from Mittelkalbach, Germany having left Bremen and arriveing in Baltimore on July 6, 1835. Other Mittelkalbach residents aboard the Ulysses included future Fulda residents John Scho[e]ppner (47), Ottilia Scho[e]ppner (25), Peter Scho[e]ppner (24), Eva Scho[e]ppner (14), Maria Elonore Scho[e]ppner (9, Johannis Heil (31), Barbara Heil (27) and Gertrude Heil (4).

John Schoeppner came from Wheeling to the farm on which his fifteen year old son Leonard lived in 1837 and built a house to which he removed his family in the following year. In the second year he met with a serious misfortune, getting his leg broken.

At the time of the John Shipner lived in Enoch Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. The 1840 census does not list the individual names of people in the household, only a breakdown by age. The breakdown (and presumed names of the family members) is as follows:
1 - male 15 - 20 years old (Leonard)
1 - male 50 - 60 years old (John)
1 - female 5 - 10 years old (Mary Ann)
1 - female 10 - 15 years old (Elizabeth)
1 - female 15-20 years old (Eva)
John Schoeppner was employed in agriculture. He could not read or write. Nearby households in the census belonged to Adam Schafer, Philip Snider, George Miller, Matthias Schockling, and John Hill. Another name in this group is hard to read -- John J?saker.

In 1850, 60 year old farmer John Shopner lived with the family of his son Leonard in Enoch Twp., Monroe County, Ohio.

At the time of the 1870 census, John Schoppner was 83 years old and infirm. He lived with the family of his son Leonard in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio. John did not own any real estate. According to the census, he was not a US citizen.

He died in 1875 in his eighty-seventh year.

Katharina Heil [Parents] 1, 2, 3 was born in 1790 in Mittelkalbach, Kreis Fulda, Hesse. She died in Oct 1835 in at sea. The cause of death was childbirth complications. She married 4 Johannes Schoeppner on 30 May 1809 in Germany.

Schoeppner family legend tells that Katharina Heil Schoeppner died in childbirth, but no evidence exists to support this. It is known that she died at sea on board the Ulysses, along with her seven year old son Herman, during the crossing to America.

They had the following children:

  F i Ottilia Schoeppner
F ii Eva Sidonia Schoeppner 1, 2 was born on 2 Aug 1813 in Mittelkalbach, Fulda, Hesse. She died before 1820 in Germany.

It is believed that Eva died in childhood, since another girl in the family -- born eight years later -- was also named Eva.
M iii Peter Schoeppner 1, 2 was born on 17 Feb 1816 in Mittelkalbach, Fulda, Hesse.

Peter Schoeppner came to America with his parents and siblings in 1835. He did not settle in the Fulda, Ohio area. It is not known what became of Peter.

Also known as Henry Sebastian Dimmerling.

Henry Sebastian Dimmerling does not appear with the rest of the family in the 1860 census. He would have been five years old at the time.

In 1880, 25 year old farmer Sebastian Dimmerling lived next door to his parents in Enoch Twp. with his wife Rachel (21). Although church records indicate that they had a daughter born in 1879 who survived to adulthood, no child is listed in the household. Sebastian's other neighbor was Frank Schwallie, who was married to Sebastian's niece Gertrude Smith.

In 1900, 44 year old farmer Sebastian Dimmerling lived on a mortgaged farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 41 year old wife, Rachel, and six children: Clara (15), Edward (13), Earnest (11), Urban (8), Lucy (5), and Roy (2).

The following report appeared in The Caldwell Press 17 Nov 1915:
Fred Sehling. a young man about 25 years of age, while pulling rods on a well
on the Sebast Dimmerling farm near Fulda, got both his hands caught in the pulleys
making necessary the amputation of six fingers and one thumb.
It is believed that the unfortunate victim was Fred Saling, son of Valentine and Elizabeth (Blake) Saling.

At the time of the 1920 census, Sebastian and Regina Dimmerling owned a farm in Enoch Twp. Living with them was farm hand William Schockling and his wife Lucy. Adjacent farms in the census were those of Louis Kress and John Saling. John Saling was the brother of Fred Saling, the farm hand who lost his fingers on Sebastian Dimmerling's farm in 1915.

He was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fulda, Noble Co., OH. He married 7 Mary Dimmerling on 13 Nov 1866 in St. Mary, Fulda, Noble Co., OH.

In 1870, 26 year old farmer Philip Gerst lived in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his wife Mary (24) and children Phronie (2) and John S. (10 mos). Also living in the house was a 12 year old girl named Onstian (?) Buch, a domestic servant who attended school. She was born in Virginia to foreign-born parents. Accoriding to the census, Philip was also born in Virginia. (This conflicts with the 1850 and 1880 census, which give his birthplace as Ohio.) Philip's wife and children were born in Ohio. His real estate was worth $3000, and his personal property was valued at $645. Philip could read but not write. Adjacent households in the census were those of John Sterangle and Philip's brother-in-law, Joseph Helfenbein.

At the time of the 1880 census, "Philip Gharst" (37) still lived in Enoch Twp. with his wife Mary (37) and children August (8), Matiltda (7), Marian (5), Rosanne (3), and Mary Amilda (8 months). According to the census none of the children attended school. (The census taker did not check of the "attended school" column for any of the children on this page or the adjacent pages of the census.) Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Philip's brother John Gerst and to Samuel Linsey.

This note appeared in the Fulda column of The Caldwell Citizens' Press on 20 Mar 1884:
John U. Brahler, August Dimmerling, and Philip Gerst went to Wheeling
Monday morning.

Noble County death records list Philip's cause of death as an "accident" but no details are given. Philip's son Leo "Jake" Gerst described the accident to family historian Roger Schockling in the early 1960s. The accident occurred when Jake was 2 years and 8 months old.

Several hired hands were felling trees and sawing logs on Philip Gerst's land. Philip had just joined the group when a log rolled over him. The hired men placed Philip -- who was in a great deal of pain -- on a horse-drawn log sled and took him home, where he succumbed to his injuries that evening.

The accident occurred close to two adjoining farms: those of John Gerst (Philip's brother) and John Schockling.

The Philip Gerst farm was later owned by Walter Rohrig.

Mary was born in Ohio to German-born parents. As an adult, she spoke English, but could not read or write. In 1900, 57 year old widow Mary Dimmerling Gerst lived in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with her four youngest children: Mary (24), Rosa (23), Milda (20), and Leo (18). The census states that all six of Mary's children were still living in 1900; however, church records indicate that Mary had eight children. The first two, Veronica and Sebastian, died in 1872 when they were five and three years old, respectively.

Sixty-seven year old widow Mary Gerst lived alone at the time of the 1910 census.
