At the time of the 1870 census, 40 year old "Felds Sheets" was still living in Enoch Twp. with his wife Edelia (35) and children John (12), William (11), Catherine (8), Eve (7), Henry (4), and Joseph (8 mos.) The oldest three children attended school.

In June 1880, "Valentine Sheets" (59) lived in Enoch Twp. with his wife Odelia (41) and eight children: John (22), William (20), Eve (16), Henry (14), Joseph (10), Mary (8), Philip (6), and Alexander (1). All the children attended school except John (the oldest) and Alexander (the youngest). Valentine's birthplace in the census is "Fulda, Germany." Everyone else in the household was born in Ohio. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Christopher Rich and David Parks.

In 1860, 40 year old day-laborer Allen Rouse lived in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his children: Simon (15), Philomina (14), Catherine (12), Mary A. (10), and Adam (8). Aloysius and the two older childern were born in Hesse; the three younger children were born in Pennsylvania. According to the census, none of the children attended school. Aloysius' wife Margaret was not listed with the family and is presumed to have died before the census.

At the time of the 1870 census, tailor Lewis Rauch (53) lived in Enoch Twp. with his children Philomena (22), Catherine (21), Mary (19), and Adam (17). Philomena kept house, and the rest of the children all worked in the tailor shop. Adam also attended school. Mary was able to read but not write. Lewis' real estate was valued at $1000, and his personal property was worth $1535. Adjacent households in the census were those of grocer John B. Arnold and blacksmith Charles Ramsey.

Margaret Heldbrand 1 was born about 1820 in Hesse Cassel, Germany. She died before 1860 in Ohio. She married Aloysius Roush.

Margaret does not appear in the 1860 census with her husband and children, and is presumed to be deceased. The 1880 census entry for Margaret's son Adam Rausch states that his parents were born in Hesse.

August Dimmerling Sr. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 was born on 28 Aug 1810 in Hesse. He died on 8 Jun 1896 in Noble Co. OH. He was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fulda, Noble Co., OH. He married 8 Elizabeth Blake before 1838.

"August Dimmerling Sr. left Germany in 1836 to escape two years compulsory service in the army. He worked on the docks at Philadelphia for four years before coming to Noble County. It was in Philadelphia that his oldest children, two girls, were born." (source: Keith Schockling)

According to "History of Noble County, Ohio, 1887" Michael Blake, August Dimmerling (husband of Elizabeth Blake), and Francis Ebert (husband of Maria Anna Blake) came to Enoch Township (then in Monroe County, Ohio) from Philadelphia in 1840, . The relationship (if any) between Maria Anna, Elizabeth, and Michael Blake/Block is unknown. Maria Anna and Elizabeth may have been sisters, since their fathers had the same name (Valentine).

At the time of the 1850 census, 39 year old farmer Gustus Dimmerling lived with his 39 year old wife Elizabeth in Enoch Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Their children were Catherine (12), John (10), Mary (8), Elizabeth (6), Augustus (4), and Joseph (9 months). Only Catherine and John attended school. The Dimmerling farm was worth $800. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Francis Abbet (Ebert) and William Craige.

In 1860, Hessian-born 49 year old farmer Augustine Dimmerling lived in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his wife Elizabeth (49) and six children: John (19), Mary (17), Elizabeth (15), Augustine (13), Joseph (11), and Henry (7). All children attended school. Youngest son Henry Sebastian (5) is not listed in the family. Neighboring farms in the census were those of Jacob Schott and Valentine Saling.

In 1870, farmer August Dimmerling (59) lived in Enoch Twp., with his wife Elizabeth (59) and children Joseph (20), Henry (18), and Sebastian (15). Also living in the house was 10 year old Catherine Smith. Catherine is believed to have actually been Gertrude Smith, the granddaughter of August Dimmerling. (August's daughter, Catherine Gertrude, and her husband, Henry Smith, both died in 1862, leaving two orphan children under the age of 7.) Sebastian and Catherine both attended school in 1870. Adjacent households in the census belonged to John Weisent and John Blake. The relationship between John Blake and August Dimmerling's wife (Elizabeth Blake Dimmerling) is not known.

At the time of the 1880 census, August Dimmerling (70) and his wife Elizabeth (70) lived by themselves in Enoch Twp. Their neighbors were John Blake and August's son, H. Sebastian.

Elizabeth Blake 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 was born on 29 Sep 1810 in Hesse. She died 6 on 19 Mar 1886 in Enoch Twp., Noble Co., OH. The cause of death was old age. She was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fulda, Noble Co., OH. She married 7 August Dimmerling Sr. before 1838.

John's birth was noted in the Caldwell Citizens' Press on 30 Sep 1880:
... Births, September 22nd to Fidelis and Ottilia Stiernagel, a son.

In 1900, 19 year old Albert Sterangel lived with several siblings on his parents' farm in Enoch Twp, Noble County, Ohio. Like his father, Albert was a carpenter. He was able to read and write.

By 1910, Albert (29) and his wife Milda (30) "Steurnagler" had purchased a house at 236 Emerald St. in Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio, where they lived with their son Edwin (3). Albert's brother Henry lived next door, and several other members of the Gerst and Sternagle families lived nearby. Albert and Henry were both employed as house carpenters.

At the time of the 1920 census, Albert (39) and Mildred (40) Steiernagel still lived at 236 Emerald St. Living with them were their sons Edwin (13), Albert (9) and George (1 yr 6 mos). The older two boys attended school. Albert was employed as a house carpenter, as was his brother Henry, who lived next door. Other Fulda natives who lived on Emerald St. were the families of Nicholas Hartman and August Gerst (brother-in-law of Albert Sterangel).

By 1930, the family owned a home worth $4200 at 160 Rhoda Ave. in Youngstown. The household consisted of Albert Sterngel (49) and his wife Milda (50) son Edwin A. (23) and his wife Florence (19), and other sons Albert M. (19) and George E. (11). George and Albert attended school. Albert Sr. worked as a carpenter.

Barbara Matilda Gerst [Parents] "Milda, Mildred" 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 was born on 18 May 1873 in Noble Co., OH. She died in Mar 1957. She married 7 Albert John Sternagle on 30 Sep 1903 in St. Mary, Fulda, Noble Co., OH.

When the census taker visited the Snider household on June 23rd, 1880, six year old Alexander was suffering fron scarlet fever.

In 1900, Alexander Snider lived on the family farm with his father, step-mother and siblings in Stock Twp., Noble County. His occupation is listed as "farm laborer." In 1910, 35 year old Alex Snider lived in Noble County, Ohio with his 34 year old wife Mary and their children Edna and Edwin.

Alex Snider's blacksmith shop in Fulda was destroyed by fire in 1922. According to his wife's obituary, they moved to Caldwell in 1922.

Mary Ann Gerst [Parents] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 was born on 23 Sep 1875 in Fulda, Noble Co., OH. She was christened in St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Fulda, Noble Co., OH. She died on 17 Feb 1958 in Caldwell, Noble Co., OH. She was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fulda, Noble Co., OH. She married 7 Alexander Snider on 22 May 1902 in St. Mary, Fulda, Noble Co., OH.

In 1900, 24 year old Mary Gerst lived with her widowed mother and three younger siblings. She was also listed int he home of her married sister, Matilda Gerst Weber (and husband Max Weber), and brother, August Gerst at 890 Tod Avenue in Youngstown, Ohio. Marion's occupation there was listed as "servant -- house." (Census taken on June 5 1900.)

MRS. SNIDER, 82, DIES AT CALDWELL
CALDWELL, O. - Mrs. Mary Ann Gerst Snider, 82, died
Monday evening [17 Feb 1958] at 5 o’clock at her home on West
Fairground street following a long illness.
She was born Sept. 24, 1875, at Fulda in Noble county, the
daughter of Phillip and Mary Dimmerling Gerst, and was a life resident
of Noble county. She resided in Caldwell for the past 35 years and was
a member of the St. Philomena Catholic church here. Her husband, Alex-
ander Snider, died in 1929.
Surviving are one son, Edwin of Caldwell; one daughter, Mrs.
Edward Thomas of Caldwell; seven grandchildren and one brother, Leo
Gerst of Caldwell. One son died in infancy.
The body will remain at the Estadt Funeral Home until time
of services Thursday at 9 a.m. at St. Philomena church with Rev. Fr.
Stephen J. Pekalla officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s cemetery,
Fulda.

In 1900, unmarried Henry Sterangel (23) was a boarder in the home of Max and Matilda (Gerst) Weber at 890 Tod Avenue in Youngstown, Ohio. Henry was employed as a carpeter. Matilda Gerst Weber would later marry Henry Sterangel's brother, John.

In 1910, Henry "Steiarnagler" (32) owned a mortgaged home at 232 Emerald St. in Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio. He lived there with his wife, Rosa (30) and their children Hellen (6), Viola (4), Osaline (2), and twins Mary and Philip (2 months). Henry was employed as a house carpenter. Several other Fulda natives lived on Emerald St., including Henry's brother, Albert.

At the time of the 1920 census, Henry Steiernagel (44) and his wife Rosie (42) still lived at 232 Emerald St. in Youngstown. Living with them were their children Violet (14), Linea (12), Phillip (10), Mary (10), Raymond (8), Emma (6), and Leonia (4). All of the children except Leonia attended school. Henry was employed as a house carpenter. His brother Albert lived next door. Other Fulda natives who lived on Emerald St. were the families of Nicholas Hartman and August Gerst.

By 1930, the Sternangle family owned a farm worth $3100 in Ellsworth Twp., Mahoning Twp., Youngstown, Ohio. The household members were Henry (54), Rosa (52), and their children Phillip (20), Raymond (17), Emma (16), Leonia (14), Clarence H. (10), and Thomas E. (7). Only Leonia and Clarence attended school. Henry was a farmer, and Phillip and Raymond worked at odd jobs. Emma did household work in a private home.

Henry is not listed as a surviving sibling in the 1950 obituary of his brother, John.

Rosina Gerst [Parents] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 was born on 31 Oct 1877 in Noble Co., OH. She died on 27 Mar 1946. She married 8 Henry Sternagle on 30 Jul 1901 in St. Mary, Fulda, Noble Co., OH.
