LEONARD GERST SERVICES ARE TODAY
CALDWELL, O., Nov. 7. -- Leonard Gerst, 85, lifelong
resident of Noble county, died after a lingering illness,
aggravated by pneumonia, at his home six miles from
Caldwell Friday.
The aged farmer was the son of John and Catherine
Gerst, early settlers of Noble county. He is survived by
three sons, Felix, Ferdinand, and Andrew, all of the
Middleburg community, and four daughters, Mrs.
Katherine Hohman, Fulda; Mrs. Margaret Heil, Rado;
Mrs. Adelaide Pornes, Marietta; and Miss Sylvia Gerst,
of the home.
Services will be held Monday morning at 9 o'clock at
the St. Mary's Catholic church at Fulda, and will be con-
ducted by the Rev. Father J. B. Mattes. Brubach funeral
home of Summerfield is in charge, and burial will be at
Fulda.
Elizabeth Fisher [Parents] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 was born on 19 Nov 1858 in Fulda, Noble Co., OH. She was christened in St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Fulda, Noble Co., OH. She died on 25 Apr 1936 in Noble Co., OH. She was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fulda, Noble Co., OH. She married 7 Leonard Jacob Gerst on 20 Apr 1875 in St. Mary, Fulda, Noble Co., OH.
In the 1880 census, Leornard Gerst's wife is named "Malissa." Since the words "Elizabeth" and "Malissa" contain the sound "lissa" this was probably a misunderstanding by the census taker.
The 1900 census states that Elizabeth (Fisher) Gerst gave birth to eight children, all of whom were living at the time of the census. This conflicts with church records (Snider) which show that two of her children died prior to 1900: Albert died at age 2 in 1882, and Emma died in infancy in 1891.
Elizabeth Fisher Gerst was born in Ohio, as was her mother. Her father was born in Germany. Elizabeth spoke English, but could not read or write.
The seems to be some text missing in the first sentence of Elizabeth Fisher Gerst's obituary, which appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on April 27, 1936
