LOWER SALEM - Hilda Louella Tornes, 94, of Lower Salem, formerly of Marietta and Churchtown, died at 11 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 10, 2002) at Marietta Memorial Hospital. She was born June 22, 1908, in Churchtown to Joseph and Rose Meiser Thieman. She had lived in the Marietta and Washington County areas all her life. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Catholic Women's Club. She was also a member of the Marietta Senior Citizens. She enjoyed crocheting and quilting.
She is survived by four daughters, Eloise Muhlbach of Coshocton, Mary Zwick and her husband, Charles, of Harriettsville, Arlene Archer and her husband, Dave, of Lowell, and Rita Tassa and her husband, Bernie, of Alexandria, Va.; four sons, Earl Tornes and his wife, Justine, of Waterford, Charles Tornes and his wife, Karen, of Marietta, the Rev. Dale Tornes of Caldwell and John Tornes and his wife, Kathy, of Hilliard; 27 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. On Oct. 16, 1929, she married Alfred Joseph Tornes. He died on March 11, 1977. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Harold Thieman; one sister, Helen Long; and one son-in-law, Robert Muhlbach. Funeral liturgy with Mass is at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. R. Daniel Conlon, bishop of the Diocese of Steubenville, presiding. The Rev. Dale Tornes will be the celebrant. Monsignor Edward Kakascik, the Rev. Paul Hrezo and all other priests present will concelebrate. Burial will follow in New St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today and all day Friday at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home. The family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A vigil service is at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's School Foundation, 320 Marion St., Marietta, Ohio 45750; or St. John School Foundation, Route 2, Box 383, Marietta, Ohio 45750.
